Raisman became the first U.S. woman to win the gold medal in the individual floor exercise, according to CBS Sports.

The Team USA captain beat out Romania's Catalina Ponor, who won silver, and bronze medalist Aliya Mustafina of Russia.

The Needham native won the gold medal only an hour after medaling in the balance beam competition.

Following her balance beam routine Tuesday, Raisman found herself in a familiar situation. She was tied for third place, as she had been in the all-around competition, where she lost the tiebreaker and failed to medal.

This time around, however, Raisman landed on the winning side of the tiebreaker, taking home the bronze medal in the balance beam for Team USA, according to Boston.com.

Raisman's initial score of 14.946 was good for fourth place, but it was bumped to a 15.066 following a challenge by Team USA. The judges then awarded Raisman the bronze medal, giving her the tiebreak over Romania's Ponor due to Raisman's higher execution score.

Gabby Douglas, Team USA's gold medalist in the all-around competition, finished in seventh place on the beam. China won the gold and silver medals in the competition.

After Tuesday's events, Raisman now has three medals in the London Olympics.

In order to be a great quarterback, however, a player needs intangibles.

Perhaps one of the biggest influences on both a quarterback's physical and intangible skills is something slightly out of his control — confidence. And that's exactly why Rex Ryan and the New York Jets have received so much attention for their plans to use both of their quarterbacks this season.

Starting quarterback Mark Sanchez has shown glimpses of promise at times, taking the Jets to the AFC Championship in two straight years. He's also struggled, though, failing to really progress under center by limiting turnovers and closing out games.

Tim Tebow, meanwhile, is nothing short of an icon in American sports. Off the field, he is one of the most recognizable faces in the country. He responds well to the ridiculous amount of media attention he receives, always seeming to have the "perfect teammate" answer for any question. On the gridiron, Tebow has never had good throwing mechanics or a great arm, but his size and athleticism make him a versatile threat to any defense.

The two quarterbacks play vastly different styles, both of which have shown the ability to win games. Throw in the absurd amount of media attention with Tebow's ever-growing fan base, and you have yourself one difficult decision to make as a coaching staff — how and when do you play each quarterback?

Perhaps the answer is that you don't have to.

Take away the pressure of being located in one of the top markets for professional sports, along with the tension of the media hype and the fan base smitten by Tebow, and look at the situation objectively.

Ryan and the Jets unveiled their Wildcat red-zone offense on Thursday, with Tebow at the helm. Although the 6-foot-3, 240-pound lefty is a force to be reckoned with, putting him in the game means taking out Sanchez on most occasions. And that could be very dangerous.

By taking Sanchez out in the red zone, it will be difficult for him to develop any flow throughout the course of a game. If Sanchez is to start every drive, work the ball downfield and then be taken out just as the drive is about to finish, it sends a message that the team doesn't have confidence in its starting quarterback.

Although Sanchez has had problems with turnovers, throwing 18 interceptions last season, he also threw a career-high 26 touchdowns in 2011. His play even contributed to the Jets leading the league in red-zone efficiency last season. Sanchez threw four interceptions within 20 yards of the goal line in 2011. Compare that to two of the NFL's best quarterbacks in Tom Brady and Drew Brees, who both also threw four interceptions in the red zone last year, and Sanchez doesn't look so bad.

Basically, the Jets should live by the motto, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Yes, Tebow is a strong ball carrier. But scoring in the red zone isn't the team's problem. By using this strategy and taking Sanchez out at the end of drives, Ryan will only be hurting Sanchez's confidence, which is the problem the team should be addressing.

Sanchez needs to know that his team is behind him despite some struggles, otherwise the Jets are destined to fail. If he feels a match has been lit underneath him, he will have even more mental difficulties than he did in 2011, and he will continue to throw picks. Sanchez needs to know that he can take risks downfield, get comfortable in the pocket, and build momentum on the field. All of this can be done by the coaching staff, by sending a message that despite the inevitable "We Want Tebow" chants that will linger in New York, Sanchez is the guy.

Tebow is a unique player, and can still be used on occasion to throw off the defense. But if his use becomes routine, like the Kevin Kolb-Michael Vick experiment Philadelphia tried, it will only take away from Sanchez's progression and mental development as a decision maker.

This isn't to say that Sanchez is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback. He is a mid-level quarterback who may be the answer for New York, but very well may not. However, the Jets have to give him a full, 100-percent chance under center before pulling the plug. If they hit a point in their season where things aren't working and they want to use Tebow, then they should. Only they must fully commit to him as the new starter at that time. By splitting time and remaining indecisive about who to give control of the offense to, neither quarterback will succeed.

In order to make an attempt at winning the division, the Jets need stability and a confident leader under center. Besides, the Wildcat beat the Patriots once a few years ago. Do they really think it will stump Bill Belichick again?

President Barack Obama just loves talking about sports.

First he was booed after thanking people in Boston for trading Kevin Youkilis to his Chicago White Sox. Then he messed up the Miami Heat’s name while congratulating them on their championship.

Fortunately for the President, his latest sports-related speech was without error. President Obama recently congratulated Team USA’s women’s gymnastics team on their gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

President Obama said he “doesn’t understand how they do what they do,” and asked the team “how do you not bust your head every time you’re on that little balance beam?”

Gymnastics are clearly not the President’s sport, as he said “I couldn’t walk across that balance beam.”

No word from Mitt Romney on whether or not he has mastered the beam yet. If either candidate could, it would be no surprise if it was used in a corny campaign metaphor about a need for a stability or a balancing ability.

Check out the video of President Obama’s speech in the video below, via SportsGrid.

The swimmer finished second in the men's 200-meter butterfly on Tuesday. Phelps was edged at the wall by South Africa's Chad le Clos.

Le Clos finished with a time of 1 minute, 52.96 seconds. Phelps swam the distance in 1 minute, 53.01 seconds. Although it wasn't gold, the silver medal was Phelps' record-tying 18th Olympics medal.

Later in the day, Phelps — as part of the men's 4×200 relay team — won gold, his 15th gold medal and 19th medal overall, passing Russian gymnast Larissa Latynina as the athlete to receive the most medals throughout a career at the Olympic Games.

It's a historic day for Phelps and all Olympians, and a mark that's not likely to soon be matched.

One of the NBA's former "bad boys," Rodman has been in the center of controversies both on and off the court. But now the Hall of Famer is trying to use his life experiences to help teach children.

Rodman has written a children's book called Dennis the Wild Bull, according to TMZ.com. Set for release later this year, the book's purpose is to convey "good lessons to children based on Dennis' own experiences as a world-class athlete while overcoming obstacles as a child," according to the book's website.

Rodman made a name for himself in the NBA with his knack for rebounding and stifling defense, winning the Defensive Player of the Year award twice. He also was known for his unique appearance, dying his hair in bright colors to go along with many piercings and tattoos.

The five-time NBA champion was often involved in altercations with players and officials on the court, and he had troubles off the court, too. He tried to commit suicide in 1993, has been divorced several times and has battled alcohol addiction.

With all the ups and downs of his professional career and personal life, Rodman has plenty of experiences to draw from for a book. Whether those experiences are appropriate to teach children is another question.

Harlem’s famous Rucker Park is used to having commotion on the basketball court. But not the kind of pandemonium that broke out Wednesday night.

According to the New York Post, five people were shot during a basketball game at Rucker Park Wednesday night, authorities and witnesses said.

One witness, Rodney Harris Jr., told the New York Post that the shooting was a result of a fight that began in the stands.

“All of a sudden the game stopped because a fight broke out in the stands,” said Harris. “The next thing you know one guy reaches into his pants pocket and pulled out a gun. He fired one shot into the crowd and then another.”

Former New York Knicks and Boston Celtics guard Nate Robinson was in the crowd when the shooting began. According to the New York Post, he was safely escorted out of the area.

The Oakland Athletics right fielder scaled the outfield wall to grab Travis Snider‘s blast at the warning track in the bottom of the second inning against the Blue Jays on Wednesday night. When asked about the play, Reddick felt pretty heroic.

“Yes, I am part Spiderman,” Reddick told reporters after the game.

Reddick’s amazing catch wasn’t a key part of the Athletics’ victory, however, as Oakland beat the Toronto Blue Jays 16-0.

Maurice Jones-Drew led the NFL in rushing in the 2011-12 season with 1,606 yards. He has rushed for more than 1,300 yards in each of the past three seasons.

So, why is there any question of whether the Jacksonville Jaguars should renegotiate their franchise player's contract?

Well, because he is a running back. Unfortunately for Jones-Drew, the potential for career-affecting injuries for running backs is far higher than any other position on the gridiron. Although players of Jones-Drew's caliber are hard to find in the NFL, his position typically has a short shelf life, which brings high risk to a franchise that spends a lot on a long-term contract.

In most cases, the high risk is not worth taking. But the Jaguars are in a unique position. They need to take the risk and pay their star rusher, who is now holding out from training camp.

Jones-Drew does not have a history of injury that should give Jacksonville any trouble sleeping over the next few seasons. He has only missed three NFL games in his six-season career, all while averaging nearly 250 carries a season.

The Jaguars have a young offense, with second-year quarterback Blaine Gabbert at the helm. Without an effective rushing game, Gabbert will struggle to develop in Jacksonville's system under the pressure to carry an offense that has very few playmakers. Jones-Drew is really the Jaguars' only offensive threat. Without him, it's hard to see this team scoring more than once or twice a game, at the expense of risking their young quarterback's progression in the NFL.

Jones-Drew is Jacksonville's leader, and the Jaguars need him to continue to be an example to the rest of the team. The Jaguars' latest first-round draft pick, wide receiver Justin Blackmon, was recently arrested for drunken driving and is the type of player that could blossom into one of the NFL's best deep threats if given proper guidance from a leader like Jones-Drew. Plus, Blackmon has still not signed his rookie contract — a move that could happen faster if Jones-Drew and the Jaguars work out a new deal first.

But ultimately, the Jaguars need to renegotiate Jones-Drew's deal because of the state of the franchise. Jacksonville is a small-market NFL team that doesn't receive much national attention and hasn't reached the playoffs since losing to the New England Patriots in 2005. After the team was sold to Shahid Khan in 2011, there were plenty of rumors that the team could move to a more lucrative market such as Los Angeles. If the team doesn't have its star player, Jaguars fans can expect those rumors to linger.

This fan base hasn't had much to cheer for outside of Jones-Drew. He is worth the risk. The Jaguars need him to sell tickets and keep fans interested — but they also need him to win.

So making racist comments right before the start of the games is more than just frowned upon.

According to Yahoo Sports, Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou was cut from her country’s Olympic team on Wednesday, after making racist comments on her Twitter account.

“With so many Africans in Greece… at least the West Nile mosquitos will eat homemade food!!!,” Papachristou tweeted from her personal Twitter account, @papaxristoutj.

The triple jumper also retweeted a comment from Greek politician Ilias Kasidiaris, who criticized his government’s immigration policy as being soft, according to Yahoo Sports.

Her tweet was in reference to the West Nile virus, which was first reported in Uganda, and now has reportedly appeared in cases around Europe.

Papachristou tweeted out an apology for her remarks on Wednesday.

“I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account. I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights.”

Unfortunately for Papachristou, her apology was not enough for the Greek Olympic chiefs, who consulted with members of Greek Parliament before making the decision to cut her from the team.

After all, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have set a new bar for success that many teams in the NFL haven’t been able to live up to.

But the Patriots are still getting support outside of New England. Very, very far away from New England in fact. In a recent poll of nearly 1,400 Chinese football fans, the Patriots were voted the most popular NFL team.

New England received 366 votes, with the next closest team as the Green Bay Packers with only 200 votes.

Instead of Robert Kraft‘s plan to play NFL games in London, maybe the Patriots should start looking to play a game in China. Apparently, they would have a home crowd thousands of miles away from Gillette Stadium.

But then Scott collapsed. Four bogeys in a row, and Ernie Els was the champion.

All the people who placed bets on Scott saw their winnings disappear. But luckily, one sports book has sympathized with the gamblers who picked Scott.

One gambling site called SportsBettingOnline felt the pain of its customers after Scott's collapse and refunded the bets placed on Scott to win the British Open, according to GeoffSchackelford.com.

"With so many favorites including Woods not cashing, it was a good day for sportsbooks. But that wasn't the case for those who dropped money on Scott," said Dave Johnson, head oddsmaker for SportsBettingOnline. "We feel it's our duty to refund the players for taking such a bad bet. His collapse was historic, and we know the bettors who had him must feel as awful as he does."

Although it must sting knowing they had 40-to-1 odds in their favor for Scott to win the British Open, getting a refund for a failed bet is almost unheard of, and it must have helped to soften the blow.

But some people still haven't come to terms with what happened in the scandal and why people are being punished. Some of these people have taken to Twitter to express their disgust with the NCAA and their support for the Nittany Lions football program.

The sanctions handed down by the NCAA on Monday included a $60 million fine, a four-year bowl ban, vacating all 112 wins between 1998 and 2011, and the elimination of 10 scholarships for the 2012 season, plus 20 scholarships a year from 2013-2016.

While many people agree that the sanctions are fair and necessary, plenty of Penn State students, fans and supporters disagree.

Check out the tweets from the people outraged by the sanctions against Penn State in the Storify below.

The team’s backup running back Dion Lewis had the criminal charges against him dismissed in court on Monday.

According to Bryan Fitzgerald of the Times Union, Dion and his brother Lamar Lewis were both charged with a felony of falsely reporting a fire and a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment during a July 8 incident at a Hampton Inn hotel in Albany, NY.

Police said that the two brothers were trying to knock down the glass doors to the hotel’s lobby and pulled a fire alarm after they were not allowed inside by hotel security. According to the Lewis brothers’ attorneys, the two were coming back to the hotel from a night of drinking and were locked out without their room keys.

A member of the hotel staff called 911, saying the men were banging on the doors, “trying to break them down,” and that Lamar Lewis was seen in the lobby with a small knife. In the 911 call in the video below via the Union Times, the Hampton Inn employee told police to “get here right away.”

Upon arriving on scene with guns drawn, police handcuffed and pepper sprayed the two brothers, before dragging them outside. According to the Times Union, Police spokesman Steve Smith said officers used the spray because they believed the brothers were trying to break into the hotel while in possession of a knife.

Smith said that the incident is being reviewed, but there was nothing to indicate the officers acted inappropriately. District Attorney David Soares said he believed the officers reacted the way they did because of the description of the scene from the 911 call. Neither of the Lewis attorneys commented on the use of force by police.

The two brothers could have faced up to four years in prison if convicted, but will go free as long as they remain out of trouble for six months. It was shown that the two men never pulled a fire alarm, and were not trying to break into the hotel but were just locked out of their room.

Check out the video of the arrest and the audio of the 911 call in the videos below, via the Times Union.

While some gamblers could make a profit betting on heavy favorites like Usain Bolt, the reigning Olympic champion with great odds to win the 100-meter dash, other people could be dropping their money on some whimsical bets.

According to The Associated Press, many gambling houses in London have been encouraging people to contact them with any bet they can dream up. What is likely the longest odds in the entire Olympic Games, the William Hill gambling house is offering 1,000-to-1 odds that a flying saucer is spotted over Olympic Stadium during Friday’s opening ceremony. But the crazy bets don’t end there — not by a long shot.

Other unusual bets include whether or not the Olympic Games will be over budget, if a British athlete will be pictured while eating a Big Mac from McDonald’s or if the athletes village in Olympic Park will run out of condoms.

There are 250-to-1 odds that every 4×400-meter relay final drops the baton, and 33-to-1 odds that London Mayor Boris Johnson lights his hair on fire with the Olympic torch.

If you are one of the people that trust the predictions of meteorologists enough to gamble, then you could be in line to make some money. There are even-money odds that it will rain in London during Friday’s opening ceremony, and 50-to-1 odds that it will rain every day during the July 27 through Aug. 12 competition.

And for those people who don’t believe in extra-terrestrial life, or don’t like the odds that the torch bearer trips on their way to light the Olympic flame, there are thousands of bets covering every event at the Olympic games. The United States is favored to win the most logical bet — most overall medals — with China in a close second.

While some of these bets are ridiculous, they insight some extra fun into the games. In between cheering on Michael Phelps, LeBron James and the rest of the United States Olympians, people can find themselves rooting for athletes to trip or for Lolo Jones to make a McDonald’s run.

Don’t feel like you would make a profit on your bet of a UFO sighting? In the words of Kevin Malone from NBC’s sitcom The Office, “If someone gives you 10,000-to-1 [odds] on anything, you take it.”

Who knows? Maybe some spectator will mistake an airplane for a spaceship.

No matter how your team is performing or where you have to be on a Sunday, you know that your jersey looks great. But which jerseys are the most fitting for the NFL?

Think about it. Each NFL franchise picked a logo and team colors for a reason. Whether it's to look tougher, flashier or faster, each team started out with a basic uniform for a purpose. But whose jerseys achieve that purpose the best?

It's pretty hard to beat the black on black uniforms that Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints wear from time to time in the regular season. Still, other teams like the Dallas Cowboys or Green Bay Packers have an aged and experienced look that have made their jerseys iconic in the NFL. Check out where the rest of the NFL's uniforms stack up against each other in the gallery below.

Newly drafted players have begun trying to prove themselves to their new teams, many big name free agents have signed in new cities, while others like Dwight Howard await a potential trade.

But even with all these changes in talent, no player matches the significance of a move the league could be making this offseason — hiring two female referees.

According to Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com Hangtime, two women are being considered as NBA referees for the 2012-13 season.

Lauren Holtkamp and Brenda Pantoja are the two being considered to become the league's newest officials. Both candidates are former WNBA referees, and also officiated the semifinals of the NBA's Development League playoffs. Joe Borgia, the league's Vice President of Referee Operations, said the two officials are among the best applicants for the jobs.

"They're top candidates," Borgia said. "In fairness to the other refs, I can't go any further than that."

Holtkamp and Pantoja would not be the first females to officiate in the National Basketball Association. In 1997, Violet Palmer and Dee Kantner became the first female referees to enter the league. Palmer is currently the NBA's only active female referee, and has worked the playoffs seven years running.

If the NBA decides to hire either (or both) Holtkamp and Pantoja, it will be taking another step in the right direction. The league made a statement when hiring Palmer and Kantner back in 1997, becoming the first of the United States' big four sports to hire a female referee.

The MLB, NFL and NHL all have not hired a single woman to officiate a game. And that is not because of a lack of supply.

For whatever reason, be it tradition, avoidance, or ignorance, the country's highest level of sports have excluded females from positions in which they could reasonably do just as well as men.

This isn't an argument of talent or ability. It's a simple matter of knowledge. And there's no reason to assume that Holtkamp, Pantoja or any other woman can't learn a sport just as well as a man can. So what if they have to put their hair in a ponytail? Gender doesn't impact an ability to see the court or blow a whistle.

The NBA has been a trailblazer in this regard. It has been 15 years since Palmer and Kantner were hired, and still the rest of professional sports hasn't caught on. But the NBA isn't waiting — it's moving forward.

The association hasn't put on a PR campaign or handled these refs with any special care, and that was the perfect way to do it. If the league were to hold the female referees in a different light, it would defeat the purpose of hiring them all together. They are held to the same standards as male refs, in both hiring and performance.

Just look at Kantner. She lasted less than five years in the NBA, and was fired in 2002 for poor performance. It's that simple. It didn't matter that she was female when she was hired, and it didn't when she was let go.

Maybe the MLB, NFL and NHL will follow suit in the near future. Palmer has solidified herself amongst NBA players and coaches as a great referee, and established a reputation that can lead the way for women after her. Only time will tell, as it has been 15 years since Palmer's first days in the NBA and the other leagues still haven't taken notice to consider a change.

The NBA doesn't make final decisions on candidates for referees until September. Regardless of whether Holtkamp or Pantoja make the cut, the league has made a statement just by recognizing them as top candidates. A statement that's showing actions speak louder than words.

Mayo Now the NBA's Top Free Agent, But May Not Be Available Long" style="width: 400px;margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px" />Just a month ago, the NBA free agency pool was overflowing with big names that many teams were eager to reel in. Now, the pool is rapidly shriveling up, leaving one man as the big fish in the small pond of free agents — O.J. Mayo.

The last few weeks have been very busy for some of the NBA's biggest All-Stars.

One of the greatest big men to play the game, Tim Duncan, surprised no one when he re-signed with the San Antonio Spurs. Deron Williams, who was widely considered the most talented and sought after free agent this offseason, turned down his hometown Dallas Mavericks and re-signed with the Brooklyn Nets. Boston Celtics fans were happy to see future Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett rejoin the team, but then had to watch the NBA's all-time three-point leader Ray Allen leave them for the Miami Heat.

With these players now off the market, in addition to Gerald Wallace, Brook Lopez and Jason Terry, Mayo is left holding all the cards.

A highly-touted player drafted out of USC with the third-overall pick in 2008, Mayo is an explosive player that can help virtually any team's current situation. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard has experience in the starting role, where he played his first two seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies. Over the last two seasons, however, the Grizzlies moved Mayo to their sixth-man spot coming off the bench.

Mayo has the athleticsm and mentality to step back up into a starting role, if necessary. He can run the floor in transition, takes care of the ball (averaging only 2.1 turnovers per game for his career) and has shown he can score in the half court set as well, averaging 15.2 points per game over four seasons.

But if all his upsides aren't enough to land him on a team that needs a starter, Mayo is a player capable of instant offense off the bench. He has never been an Allen or Kobe Bryant-type player who can knock down every shot he takes. But Mayo has a switch that's easy to flip, and it doesn't take him long to impact a game.

Over the last two seasons, Mayo has averaged over 26 minutes per game coming off the pine, shooting .408 from the floor. He is a capable defender, and helps out on the glass averaging 3.3 rebounds per contest.

Despite his athleticism, Mayo isn't a transcendent player by any means. But he is by far the best free agent in the NBA's current depleted pool. And compared to the other top free agents at his position, Mayo stands alone.

His closest competition is former Houston Rockets shooting guard Courtney Lee. Over his four-year career, Lee has started in less games than Mayo (135 compared to 180), and is viewed as a three-point threat more than a scorer with the complete package Mayo has. Lee has averaged 10 points a game over his career, compared to Mayo's 15.2, while only shooting slightly better from three-point land (.386 compared to Mayo's .375).

At other positions, Mayo still offers more to a franchise.

Both D.J. Augustin and Aaron Brooks round out the top remaining point guards, assuming that Jeremy Lin re-signs with the New York Knicks. But both Augustin and Brooks are likely to be backup point guards, who lack the explosiveness to change a game off the bench like Mayo does.

At only 24-years-old, Mayo still has the potential to develop into a quality starter in the NBA, which is why many teams around the league agree that Mayo would be a perfect fit for their franchise.

According to ESPN, the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics are interested in snagging the shooting guard. With at least four teams vying for his signature, it doesn't look like Mayo will be available very long.

On Friday, the former USC standout put pressure on three of those teams, as he announced a visit with the Phoenix Suns.

"Just landed in phx for first meeting!" Mayo tweeted. "I haven't signed, just meeting."

Demand for an explosive, young shooting guard with potential is very high at the moment, and with many of the NBA's stars signed, supply is very low. Which leaves Mayo holding all the cards.

Instead of worrying about getting back into professional football, however, T.O. should be focusing on staying out of prison.

According to a report by WSBTV.com in Atlanta, Owens has not paid $20,000 he owes in child support. The former star wide receiver reportedly did not show up in court for his child support hearing on Thursday, and now could be facing possible jail time.

The report stated that Owens' attorney, David Hartin, said he didn't communicate with the wide receiver about the court date, and accepted blame for Owens' absence.

The mother of Owens' 7-year-old daughter, Melanie Page Smith, said that he has not paid the $5,000 a month the couple previously agreed to in over four months.

The 38-year-old Owens was released from his Indoor Football League team recently, and he's since started an unsuccessful campaign to return to the NFL.

T.O. should be more concerned with his current legal issues, though, let alone trying to convince a team he still has enough left in the tank for another season on the gridiron.
