Miami Heat fan Filomena Tobias is trying to bury the middle finger once and for all.

The Miami socialite became the face of the Bulls-Heat series last week when she greeted Joakim Noah with an obscene gesture after Noah was ejected from an emotion-packed game. As the photo of Tobias flipping off Noah circulated around the Internet, she got the usual attention and rude comments — and then the lid really came off.

A little digging revealed that Tobias’ late husband, Seth Tobias, had mysteriously died in his pool in 2007. The Internet, ever quick to rush to judgment, quickly started making its own connections.

Tobias ignored much of the attention, but she is now pushing back. Her lawyer, Anthony Barbuto, sent a statement to gossipextra.com saying that Tobias regrets the incident — but also that she would please like to be left alone.

“Ms. Tobias has been a devoted Miami Heat fan for as long as she can remember, and like many other devoted fans, she unfortunately allowed her passion for the team to disregard proper fan etiquette. She is only human, and her emotions got the best of her,” Barbuto wrote. “She offers her genuine apologies to anyone she has offended, and she requests that her privacy, as well as the privacy of her family, be respected at this time.

“Ms. Tobias is distressed at the needless national attention this incident has garnered and the unwarranted invasion of privacy by the press into her personal life, including the malicious and untrue reporting about her husband’s tragic passing. What started as a simple and ill-mannered gesture that was made towards a member of the opposing team who had just been ejected has now transformed into a very ugly and despicable intrusion into Ms. Tobias’ past.

“With that said, Ms. Tobias remains loyal to the Miami Heat.”

With that said, the Internet is never going to forget this one.

If the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t, then Florida offensive line coach Tim Davis may not be handing out insults at all.

Davis gave the backhanded compliment of the ages this week when talking to Gators fans about coach Will Muschamp, who is said to model his game after college football coaching heavyweight Nick Saban. If Muschamp can have even a shade of the success of Saban, who has won three championships in the last four years with Alabama, then Florida fans will be pretty happy.

Davis made it sound like he thinks Muschamp has it in him — but not without taking a Luciferian dig at Saban first.

“Will and I go back to the Miami Dolphins,” Davis told the crowd at the Space Coast Gator Club in Melbourne, Fla., according to gaitorbait.net. “I’ve always wanted to work with Will. Will’s got a plan. Will coached under the devil himself for seven years. I only did three. He did seven. And his DNA is not any different than Nick.”

Davis also highlighted the parts of Muschamp that he said set him apart from Saban.

“[Muschamp is] like the other guy, only he’s got personality,” Davis said. “He’ll smile at you. He’ll talk to you. You understand? That’s what he’s all about. That’s Will. I’m proud to work for him.”

Davis also predicted “eight national champions in a row” for Muschamp.

It’s not the first time this year a coach has tied Saban to Lucifer. Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin called him “Nicky Satan” but later apologized personally to Saban for the remark.

If the horns fit….

The full NBA board of governors, following the unanimous vote by the league’s relocation committee to reject the Maloof family’s bid to sell the Kings and move them out of Sacramento, voted down relocation 22-8 on Wednesday. George Maloof, of the family that owns majority control of the Kings (for now), then avoided reporters at the Dallas hotel where the vote took place the same way any of us would: By running and hiding in a closet.

Kings fan blog Sactown Royalty captured the emotion of the vote, and the absurdity of the aftermath, in an entertaining Twitter blow-by-blow.

Stern reporting the NBA BOG voted to reject the relocation of the Sacramento Kings to Seattle!
—
Sactown Royalty (@sactownroyalty) May 15, 2013

RT “@BrianMFloyd: George Maloof is using a baggage closet as an office now.
Maloof eventually came out and spoke with Sacramento governor Kevin Johnson and a few others. No matter Maloof’s reasoning for retreating to a closet, the moment was a fitting epilogue to what has been a sloppy (presumed) end to the Maloof’s reign in Sacramento.

Since his work is playing basketball, that is not entirely a bad thing, but it does leave him open to some ribbing every once in a while.

Marshall, who recently finished off his rookie season with the Phoenix Suns, often carries a basketball around with him even when he is not headed to practice or a game. When he brought a ball with him onto an airplane, a flight attendant either tried to mock him or did not realize how glib they sounded by telling Marshall that their 4-year-old nephew does the same thing.

flight attendant - "my nephew takes his basketball everywhere he goes too. He's four." uhh am I supposed to stop bc I'm 21? lol
—
Kendall Marshall (@KButter5) May 15, 2013

Burn. Well, at least dribbling up and down those skinny aisles will be good practice for driving through multiple defenders to get to the hoop.

“It lacked character.”

Those words have been used to describe a Tiger Woods decision before, but the fact that they’re increasingly being used to describe Woods’ on-course actions is something else.

That’s the case this week, though, as Woods finds himself embroiled in a feud with fellow golfer Sergio Garcia. Woods and Garcia weren’t shy about insulting each other as they battled for The Players Championship last weekend, and the bad blood has continued. Garcia is upset about a sequence Saturday in which he says Woods pulled a club from his bag while Garcia was hitting a shot — in a different area, but close enough that the crowd reacted and threw Garcia off his stroke.

Woods has denied accusations that he was trying to distract Garcia, saying he couldn’t see Garcia and that course marshals told him Garcia had already hit.

While both Garcia and Woods have stuck to their version of the story, Garcia appeared to get the course marshals on his side Sunday.

“He didn’t ask us nothing,” marshal Gary Anderson said, according to Sports Illustrated. “We didn’t say nothing. We’re told not to talk to the players.”

Chief marshal John North agreed with Anderson.

“Nothing was said to us, and we certainly said nothing to him,” North said. “I was disappointed to hear him make those remarks. We’re there to help the players and enhance the experience of the fans. He was saying what was good for him.

“It lacked character.”

But that’s not the end of the story. While the situation appears to perfectly continue the recent narrative that Woods is less-than-admirable both off and on the course, with everything from his chats with fans to his drops under extra scrutiny, this one may be less of a case of Woods trying to get his way and more of a basic misunderstanding.

The Florida Times-Union did a little more digging, and two other marshals now say that Woods appears to be right — but just misinformed — in what he was saying.

“It is not true and definitely unfair to Tiger,” marshal Brian Nedrich, who says he was within 10-to-12 yards of Woods, said of the accusations. “That’s because I was the one Tiger heard say that Sergio had hit.”

Marshal Lance Paczkowski, who was working with Nedrich, said he and Woods had already talked about whether more fans needed to be moved.

“He said, ‘No … I’m good,’” Paczkowski said. “We talk to players all the time if we need to in regards to their needs and crowd control.”

Nedrich and Paczkowski were going back and forth on the sidelines about whether Garcia had hit, and their comments were loud enough for Woods to hear. They say that them saying Garcia had hit meant Woods didn’t have to ask — one part of the story that the original marshals questioned, saying Woods never addressed anyone — if he simply overhead them.

Nedrich said Woods may have gotten the details out of order, but he wasn’t necessarily telling a fib.

“There was a lot going on, as usual, when Tiger plays,” he said. “Then, he’s trying to have the concentration he needs to win a tournament. It’s easy to get small details out of whack when things happen so fast. It was an unfortunate incident, and I don’t think either player is to blame.”

Lie or no lie, this much is true: It’s probably safest to check with Garcia before doing anything.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul had himself a solid first-round series against the Bruins. He scored three goals and added an assist, but it wasn’t quite enough as the B’s won Game 7 in overtime.

The forward was held pointless in the deciding game, a game in which the Leafs blew a 4-1 third-period lead. Lupul had a chance to change the nature of the game, but he was turned away by Tuukka Rask on a breakaway.

Lupul, as one might expect, isn’t taking the loss very well. Like many of today’s athletes, Lupul turned to social media on Tuesday afternoon to share his feelings.

This is what he tweeted on Tuesday afternoon.

Losing in five would have stunk. Watching James Reimer let through a few more goals after his rough beginning to the postseason would have hurt. Seeing the team’s first trip to the playoffs since 2004 end in the first round was going to be painful enough.

But the Maple Leafs had to do this to their fans. They had made the Bruins look more than underwhelming in Game 5, then again in Game 6, and then had them down 4-1 deep in Game 7 on the Bruins’ home ice.

For anyone looking for the most painful way possible to lose, this was it. The Leafs not only choked up a third-period lead but also gave up two goals in the final two minutes after the Bruins pulled their goalkeeper, letting the B’s push it to overtime then finish running over them 5-4.

In a demoralizing night for all Toronto fans, the most devastated had to be those who filled Maple Leaf Square to watch the game on a big TV screen. They cheered every Toronto goal, but they were also there when things started to go very badly late in the third.

After Patrice Bergeron put the cherry on top with his final, game-winning goal in overtime, the square was a mix of fans bolting the area as fast as they could and the ones who remained, shellshocked, staring at the screen.

Check out the video below to see Maple Leaf Square after the final goal was scored, with some fans hanging their heads in dejection, others leaving in disgust and others staying glued to the screen in disbelief.

This video shows a view from above as the final goal is scored, including people scattering like ants to get away from the loss as fast as they can (check in around the 4:45 mark).

Rapper Macklemore has blown up on the radio in the last few months with songs like “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us” on heavy rotation. When songs become popular like that, they tend to be everywhere, from bars to sporting events.

But the Seattle native has taken exception to his song “Can’t Hold Us” being played by the Oklahoma City Thunder at home games. It seems that the team has taken a liking to the song during the playoffs and has been playing it to get the crowd pumped up.

Macklemore, who is a big Seattle sports fan, took to Twitter to voice his displeasure over the unauthorized usage. Check it out in the tweets below.

Donovan McNabb is a borderline Pro Football Hall of Fame candidate, but it seems his contributions at Syracuse will be immortalized.

The former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback tweeted on Monday that the university plans to retire his No. 5 on Nov. 2. McNabb played thirteen seasons in the NFL, most recently in 2011 with the Minnesota Vikings. He was drafted in 1999 by the Eagles with the second overall pick.

Though he didn’t win a Heisman or lead his team to a national championship, McNabb’s college career at Syracuse stood out. He started every game in his four-year career, finishing with 8,581 total passing yards and 78 touchdowns. He was the Big East Offensive Player of the Year in 1996, 1997 and 1998.

Check out what McNabb had to say about the honor in the tweet below.

Seattle fans were pretty bummed out when the Supersonics left in 2008, and they are in a bad mood again now that a bid to move the Sacramento Kings up north has run into roadblocks with the NBA.

They may not ever get over the sting of seeing Kevin Durant play in Oklahoma City, where he has blossomed into one of the league’s brightest stars for the Thunder, but at least Durant remembers where he came from. Durant arrived at practice on Monday rocking the green and gold he wore for his first season as a pro. His retro Sonics snapback hat reportedly caused some murmurs as he fiddled with his iPhone.

Check out Durant’s fashion statement in the tweet below.

Saying Rangers coach John Tortorella is irascible and unhelpful in a news conference is like saying they have ice at hockey rinks. But Sunday’s after-game chit chat, after the Rangers beat the Capitals 1-0 in their first-round playoff series, was especially charming.

Tortorella has never been one to hide his lack of love for the media, but he was also in a didactic mood Sunday evening, sort of explaining why he wouldn’t be responding to different reporters.

First, Tortorella shut down a reporter whose phrasing began with the words, “Talk about.” Tortorella informed him that he would not be “talking about” anything, and that he needed to be asked a question.

Next, Tortorella flat-out didn’t like a question he received, grumbling, “Holy crap. Give me another question, please.” (The question was something like, “When you say handled it, physically, like handling on the ice, what do you think that means?”)

But none of that compared to the reporter who finally got a decent question across — albeit it a closed-ended one. Tortorella gave a simple “no” and then left the news conference, having had his fill of the media once again.

Check out another of Tortorella’s finest in the video below.

The legend of Filomena Tobias continues to grow.

The Miami fan drew attention this week after she celebrated Wednesday night’s ejection of Chicago’s Joakim Noah by raising her middle finger in his face as he left the court. Tobias soon acquired quite a bit of fame on the Internet, and the story only got juicier when it was discovered that Tobias has a pretty ridiculous background.

Well, if you’ve been waiting for more on Tobias, we’ve got you covered. Video from the TNT broadcast of the play that got Noah ejected shows that Tobias continued her moment of awesome after Noah disappeared into the tunnel. With other Miami fans cheering on Tobias’ finger skills, she turned around and high-fived a bro in the stands.

Check it out in the GIF below, courtesy of Guyism, or see the full video below that, with a hat tip to Business Insider.

Expectations were low for the Red Sox entering 2013, but so far the team has far and away exceeded them.

Nearly a quarter of the way through the season, Boston is very much in the hunt, and although there are plenty of games left to be played, there are also plenty of reasons to be optimistic about this team’s chances. With that in mind, NESN Nation’s Dan Duquette asked our Twitter followers what the biggest surprise this year has been.

Check out what fans had to say in the above video.

Or at least baseballs with pink laces. This will mark the eighth year that the league has used pink-themed gear, but it will be a first for the balls, which also have pink lettering to go with the stitching.

The league is expected to auction off game-used items after Sunday’s game, so the balls are sure to be collector’s items come Monday morning. Check out a photo of the new balls below.

Trevor Plouffe's calls himself a"lover of America."

Minnesota third baseman Trevor Plouffe should have a cheering section waiting for him when he digs in at Fenway Park on Thursday, but it won’t have anything to do with the Twins or the Red Sox.

Instead, it will be because Plouffe invited four officers from the Watertown, Mass., police department to Thursday’s game, according to a team spokesman. The selfless gesture should certainly earn him goodwill among fans of both teams, as Plouffe shows his thanks to the police department that helped capture those responsible for the Boston Marathon bombings.

Very classy move by @TPlouffe24 inviting 4 Watertown Police Officers to tonight's @Twins game at Fenway.
—
Dustin Morse (@Twins_morsecode) May 09, 2013

Plouffe, who describes himself as a “lover of America” on his Twitter profile, certainly is doing his best to prove it on Thursday night.

Danny Ainge made his regular radio appearance on Thursday, and the Celtics’ president of basketball operations offered several pieces of good news for Boston fans among one major bit of bad news.

Ainge, speaking with Michael Holley and Mike Salk on WEEI, dispelled the belief that there will be major changes to the Celtics this offseason. Ainge said he expects Kevin Garnett and Doc Rivers both to be back next season, and that he believes Paul Pierce has a lot of basketball left to play. However, Ainge also admitted that the Celtics are “more than one player away” from contending for another championship.

“We’re more than one player away, unless it’s a great player,” Ainge said. “It’ll be tough to become a championship team from where we are.”

While Ainge reiterated that he expects Rajon Rondo to be ready for the start of training camp, he had no updates on Garnett other than his hunch. Ainge will give Garnett about a week to “chill” before touching base with the 36-year-old big man about his future. Garnett is signed through 2015.

As for Rivers, Ainge insisted he feels the Celtics have the best coach in the NBA and scoffed at rumors about a rift between the two. In addition, he called anything Stephen A. Smith has said in recent days “silly,” but we already knew that.
