Not until recently — when Boston traded Adrian Gonzalez to Los Angeles — did the
Red Sox need to think about who would be fielding ground balls at first base
for the near future. James Loney has
been the short-term replacement, and Shaw could have the opportunity to become
the long-term solution.

Shaw was hitting .305 through 99 games with Single-A Salem
before being promoted to Double-A Portland. At just 22 years old, he could be
seeing time in the big leagues before you know it.

Check out the video above to hear Shaw talk during The Ultimate Red Sox Show about what he's
been working on this season and how much he's improved.

J.T. Watkins surely isn't the first professional baseball player to come out of the Army. Likewise, Watkins surely isn't the first pro ball player to have a major league scout for a dad. The combination, however, might be unique to his experience.

Watkins was drafted much higher than expected by the Red Sox, in the 10th round of the amateur draft, and got into 17 games this season with the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League, going 9-for-45 with his first wood bat home run. It was an experience the younger Watkins has long been prepared for, however, as his father, Danny Watkins, is a longtime area scout for Boston.

Check out the video above to learn more about the Red Sox' potential catcher of the future.

When Sean Coyle was taken in the third round of the 2010 amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox out of high school, he was suddenly a player facing many, many adjustments.

First there are the normal adjustments, learning to hit with a wood bat and act day-to-day at the professional level. But beyond that, Coyle, a shortstop by trade, was asked to make the transition to second base, and it hasn't necessarily been easy. The current Salem Red Sox player admits that at first he had issues with his footwork, specifically turning the double play. However, all indications are that Coyle's a scrappy, hard-working player, so all that hard work is already paying off at the Single-A level.

Check out the video above to watch a profile of perhaps the next Red Sox second baseman.

Wade Boggs already had a career which was recognized by a Hall of Fame — the one in Cooperstown, in fact.

With 3,010 hits over the course of an 18-year career, Boggs went down as one of the greatest third basemen in the history of the major league game. But he also had an impressive minor league career, as well.

Boggs played with the Pawtucket Red Sox in 1980 and 1981, and this year was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame along with longtime PawSox general manager and president Mike Tamburro. In fact, Boggs himself had some kind words for Tamburro and his legacy in Pawtucket.

It’s not too often that baseball and fine art go hand-in-hand, but at the Grandstand to Gallery Exhibition at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, that’s exactly the case.

Celebrating 100 years of Fenway Park history, this year the two organizations decided to honor the ballpark by featuring a gallery of Fenway art submitted by fans. Ultimately, six photographs were chosen from 700 submissions broken up into three categories — portraits, landscapes and curveballs. Three were chosen by the director of the MFA, and three were voted on by the fans.

Fenway and the MFA have shared the same neighborhood for those 100 years, so if you, too, are a connoisseur of fine art, you can check out Jenny Dell‘s experience at the gallery in the video above.

Deven Marrero seems to be living a charmed life — after all, who wouldn't want to be a first-round pick of the Boston Red Sox?

But the former ASU standout — where he was a two-time Pac-10 First Team selection — and current Lowell Spinners shortstop hasn't had as easy a go of it in the past as many might expect.

In the summer after Marrero graduated high school, his father was sentenced to a prison sentence lasting until 2025 after being convicted on charges of, among other things, sexual battery and molestation. Then, before he had ever stepped on the field for Arizona State, the coaching staff that recruited him was removed following a program scandal and subsequent NCAA charges.

Hear what Marrero has to say regarding his ability to learn from his past and put it behind him in the above video from The Ultimate Red Sox Show.

His path to the big leagues may be blocked at the moment by Jose Iglesias in Pawtucket, but Xander Bogaerts is doing his best to force the issue as he attempts to climb his way up through the minor league system.

Bogaerts, a 19-year-old shortstop from Aruba, plays for the High-A Salem Red Sox and was ranked the No. 58 prospect in baseball by Baseball America prior to this season. Heading into Sunday's action, he's batting .287 with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs.

Brandon Jacobs is a familiar name to followers of New England sports. The 30-year-old running back beat the Patriots in two Super Bowls with the Giants before signing with the 49ers this offseason.

But soon, New England fans may have a chance to root for a different Brandon Jacobs — the Red Sox' 21-year-old outfield prospect, who's in the midst of a successful season with the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League. Through 72 games, Jacobs is hitting .279 with a .334 on-base percentage and a .434 slugging percentage. He's hit seven homers, driven in 42 runs and stolen 12 bases, a year after swiping 30 for Single-A Greenville.

Check out the video above to learn more about the three-sport high school star who turned down a football scholarship to Auburn to pursue his dream of playing in the majors.

Two years ago, the future looked limitless for Ryan Westmoreland, an outfielder rated as the top prospect in the Red Sox system.

Then everything came crashing down, as Westmoreland had to undergo emergency brain surgery to remove a cavernous malformation in his brain, the kind of condition that could easily prematurely end a playing career. However, now a couple years down the line, the story may yet have a happy ending. Westmoreland is working his way back and may actually end up getting in to some minor league games by the end of the season. Of course, there are some lingering side effects of the condition, but the Rhode Island native is working hard to overcome those, too.

Watch the video above to hear about Westmoreland's inspiring story.

With Darnell McDonald on his way out of Boston, presumably that puts a premature end to the "kid reporter" gig of his daughter, Jiana McDonald.

Given her natural charisma, chances are she'll be taking Jenny Dell's job a few years down the line, but it seems like an appropriate chance to take one last look at one of Jiana's best interviews — with Red Sox president Larry Lucchino. Chances are Lucchino's never been in such a tough interview, as him and Jiana play a little word association, and talk about his favorite aspects of the job and Fenway Park.

Watch the video above to bid Jiana adieu.
