appearances in St. Louis.
Bay started in left field for the American League and batted fifth,
going 1-for-2 in his four and a half innings of play with a single off
starter Tim Lincecum in the first inning. Bay is now 2-for-5 (.400) in two All-Star Game appearances.
Youkilis pinch hit for the pitcher’s spot, which belonged to Jonathan Papelbon at the time, in the eighth inning. Youkilis lined a single to center field off Heath Bell
in his only at-bat for his first career All-Star Game hit. He was
0-for-2 in his only other Midsummer Classic at Yankee Stadium in 2008.
Papelbon pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning as part of the bridge to Mariano Rivera, earning the win for the AL. He has now pitched in three All-Star Games, allowing one earned run over three innings of work.
