Everybody in the NBA is already busy looking towards the summer of
2010, but there are some pretty good free agents to be had this
offseason.
One of them is Allen Iverson, a former MVP, 10-time All-Star and four-time league scoring champion.
So far the main suitors seem to be the Miami Heat, who could pair Iverson up with Dwyane Wade to create a scoring tandem much like the Nuggets did with AI and Carmelo Anthony;
the Memphis Grizzlies, who could pay more than anyone else; and the Los
Angeles Clippers, who could … offer “The Answer” a one-year deal and a
seat on the bench.
According to a report from ESPN.com, the Clippers want to have a
sit-down meeting with Iverson to talk with him about his feelings on
being their sixth man. If they believe he is willing to accept that
role, then they could offer him a one-year contract for the mid-level
exception of $5.8 million.
If Los Angeles’ other team was somehow able to land Iverson, they
might be in a position to turn some heads this year despite a intensely
competitive Western Conference.
With a core of Iverson, Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, Quentin Richardson, Blake Griffin and Marcus Camby,
the Clippers would have a surprising amount of talent and could be in a
position to improve drastically after their wretched 19-63 campaign
last year.
Of course, signing Iverson remains a big “if” for the Clippers. They
likely would need Iverson to forgo more years, more money and a better
chance at winning to sign with them — and this is a man who is not
exactly known for a team-first attitude.
