According to Jets beat writer Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News, Jets running back Leon Washington may get a new deal with the Jets by Friday.
Washington was scheduled to earn the minimum salary of $535,000 this year — his fourth season in the NFL. The dynamic running back who also returns punts and kickoffs will hold out of training camp if a new deal isn't made.
Cimini believes that there's a good chance both parties will agree by the start of camp, which begins Friday in Cortland:
The Leon Washington negotiations are heating up. It seems that both sides want to get a deal by Friday, an encouraging sign. From what I hear, the ball is in the Jets' court. They're preparing a counter proposal for Washington, who is believed to be seeking $6 million per year. I'll stick with the same prediction I made in May: IF this gets done, it'll be $4.5 mil per year, with $15 million guaranteed. Advice to Jets: Just pay him.
The 26-year-old has recorded 1,451 yards and 13 touchdowns in three seasons as a part-time player for the AFC East squad.
