Jul 31, 2009

Hours after reported the Marlins and the Nationals were close to "moving on," the two teams were able to work out a deal to send first baseman Nick Johnson to Florida, reports.

The Marlins will send Double-A pitcher Aaron Thompson to Washington, while the Nationals are reportedly paying $1.8 million of Johnson's remaining salary.

Johnson will become a free agent at the end of the season, but the Marlins appear to be making a playoff push. They currently sit six games behind the Phillies for the lead in the NL East and three games back of the Giants in the wild-card race.

Johnson is batting .295 with six home runs and 44 RBIs this season. In parts of eight seasons in the majors, Johnson has hit .273, averaging roughly 11 homers and 45 RBIs per season.
