Maybe he is just trying to keep his fan base from completely jumping ship or maybe he is just in denial, but Omar Minaya apparently hasn't lost hope in the 2009 Mets.
With the trade deadline just a little over a week away, Minaya told the New York Post that he doesn't see his club becoming a seller given its current place in the National League standings.
The Mets are 10 games behind the Phillies in the East and 7 1/2 games out of the NL wild-card spot following their 3-1 loss to the Nationals on Wednesday. According to Minaya, there is no reason for the Mets to think they aren't still in both races.
"Right now, we do not envision [being a seller]," Minaya told the Post prior to Wednesday's loss. "If we're 6 1/2 [back] in the wild card with a couple of teams in front of us, we are still kind of trying to find out how we can improve this team, if we can improve it through trades."
The Mets are without Jose Reyes, John Maine and Carlos Delgado, though they expect the three of them to return in August. By then, though, at their current rate, the Mets could be significantly further back.
