According to a report from ESPN.com, commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to grant Vick a conditional reinstatement into the league. But that could include a four-game suspension, which likely would hinder Vick's ability to sign on with a team this summer.
Sports Illustrated reported on Thursday that Vick and Goodell met on Wednesday at a security firm in New Jersey. Vick purportedly apologized to Goodell for lying about his involvement in dogfighting, but ESPN sources said that that was not necessarily what Goodell cared about.
"The commissioner has said many times, 'This is not about me,'" one source said.
Vick was sentenced to 23 months in jail for his role in a dogfighting ring, at which point Goodell also suspended him indefinitely from the league. Many had speculated that after being released, Vick would be be able to play the full NFL season, as he had already served his time for his transgressions.
But after the meeting on Wednesday, that no longer appears to be the case. And even if he is allowed to play in all 16 games in 2009, no team has publicly expressed interest in Vick.
With most training camps less than a week away, the clock is ticking on the former superstar and his NFL return.
