After taking a 94-mph fastball to the noggin last weekend, Mets star David Wright is lucky to be walking, let alone preparing to return to the diamond sometime later this season.
But when asked how he felt on Monday, the third baseman told the New York Daily News that he was feeling a little more than dizzy from the concussion he sustained from Matt Cain's high heater.
"It was the first time I spent the night in a hospital room, it's the first time I've been out for more than a day," Wright told nydailynews.com. "There is a part of me that is grateful that they have taken [the decision to play] away and out of my hands, where they told me what I am going to do. I never wanted to go on the DL. There is a part of me that is embarrassed to be on the DL."
Wright is due to come off the 15-day DL on Aug. 31 and intends to be inserted back into the lineup immediately. He hopes to begin light aerobic activities soon after he undergoes a concussion test.
Unlike Rick Porcello's recent plunking of Kevin Youkilis last week, Wright knows that this HBP was unintentional.
"He might have wanted to come in, but he definitely didn't want to throw the ball right through," Wright said. "Normally you feel you can get away and dodge it, and I remember the ball came halfway, didn't think I was going to be able to get out of the way so I just braced for it. The scariest thing was not so much getting hit, but seeing the pitch coming towards me and knowing I was going to get hit."
