David Wright Suffers Concussion After Being Hit in Head How's this for eerie? Just days after telling the New York Times he'd be open to wearing a new, safer batting helmet, New York Mets third baseman was struck in the head by a Matt Cain fastball and suffered a concussion.

The pitch that hit Wright was traveling at 94 miles per hour, and Wright was taken to a hospital shortly after being hit, The New York Post reports. A CT scan was negative and Wright will stay overnight at the hospital, according to the report.

Earlier this week, Wright was in the minority of players in favor of a new batting helmet that provided more protection for hitters.

“If it provides more protection, then I’m all for it,” Wright told the Times. “I’m not worried about style or looking good out there. I’m worried about keeping my melon protected.”

Most of the other players interviewed in the story were against the new helmet for its awkward look, including Mets teammate Jeff Francouer and fellow New Yorker Mark Teixeira.

“No, I am absolutely not wearing that,” Francoeur told the Times. “There’s got to be a way to have a more protective helmet without all that padding. It’s brutal. We’re going to look like a bunch of clowns out there.”

Teixeira agreed, saying, “The one I’ve used for my entire career is fine.”

To literally add insult to injury, Cain tipped his cap to a New York crowd that was booing him relentlessly. The Giants went on to win the game in 10 innings.
