Former Boston College standout Patrick Eaves is heading to Detroit as the Red Wings signed the free agent forward to a one-year deal worth a reported $500,000.

Eaves was recently traded to the Bruins from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Aaron Ward but the 25-year-old was immediately placed on waivers after the trade.

The 2005 Hobey Baker finalist at BC stormed out of the gate in his first two seasons with the Senators, who plucked him 29th overall in the 2003 draft. In the 2005-06 season he potted 20 goals, and a year later, he posted 14 goals to go with 18 assists.

"His first two years in the league, he was great and then he got injured, and he's never really reached his potential," Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill told the Detroit Free Press.
