The Giants went out in the first round of the postseason last year because of their lack of a star wide receiver. But the G-Men hope they have solved that problem by agreeing with first-round pick Hakeem Nicks on a five-year, $12.5 million deal.
Nicks, who was drafted by the Giants with the 29th overall pick in the 2009 draft, is expected to sign the deal on Saturday at the Giants training camp in Albany, N.Y. Nicks' agent Peter Schaffer and Giants assistant general manager Kevin Abrams finished working out the agreement early Saturday after spending three days trying to come to terms.
"It was very important for Hakeem to be in training camp on time, so he can do his part to help the team win a championship," Schaffer told The Associated Press in a phone interview. "He did not want to miss any practice time while his teammates were on the field and that was a strong impetus to get the deal done."
In three seasons at North Carolina, Nicks set 14 school records including catches (181), yardage (2,840) and touchdown receptions (21).
According to a source, Nicks will receive $6.5 million in signing-bonus money.
