Throughout this year?s two-day broadcast on NESN and WEEI, viewers and listeners were able to see and hear how cancer affects the lives of many people. Guests on NESN and WEEI provided firsthand accounts of their battles with various types of cancers and, in the best cases, their successful attempts to win. It is our hope that events like the Radio-Telethon will someday help every story become a success story.
While there were many extremely generous gifts from Red Sox management and sponsors that helped the Radio-Telethon come close to its goal of raising $5 million, it was the contributions from fans and supporters all across the country — however big or small — that truly made this year?s event special. The Radio-Telethon received gifts from each and every state in America.
NESN and WEEI have teamed up for the Radio-Telethon since 2002 to support cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the best cancer treatment center in New England and one of the most renowned in the world. The Jimmy Fund was founded in 1948 and has raised over $500 million for Dana-Farber. The Red Sox began their partnership with the Jimmy Fund in 1953, and this special alliance remains the broadest between a team and a charity in all of professional sports.
Guests on this year?s Radio-Telethon included Red Sox players Jon Lester, Mike Lowell, Dustin Pedroia, Jonathan Papelbon and Jason Bay. The event garnered celebrity support from the likes of Ben Affleck, Kelly Clarkson, Denis Leary and Dane Cook.
