The Patriots have traded defensive end Le Kevin Smith to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a 2010 fifth-round draft choice, Bill Belichick said on Monday.

According to the Boston Globe, Smith was on the field for practice on Monday before leaving. The deal was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Smith was drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round (206th overall) of the 2006 draft out of the University of Nebraska. He played in 31 games over three seasons for the Patriots and registered 14 tackles in a career-high 15 games in 2008.
