He made his mark on Duke basketball. Now, he'll try to do the same for Syracuse football.
Former Blue Devils point guard Greg Paulus has been named the starting quarterback for the Orange in 2009, as announced on Monday by head coach Doug Marrone. He hasn't played football in four years, and he's never played in college, but that didn't matter.
Paulus, who completed his undergraduate studies at Duke and played for four years under Mike Krzyzewski, transferred to Syracuse as a graduate student. According to ESPN.com, he beat out sophomore Ryan Nassib and senior Cam Dantley for the starting job and will play on Sept. 5 against Minnesota.
Paulus may not have any football experience at the collegiate level, but according to Marrone, he has the necessary intangibles, and that's all that matters.
"He has instincts that are hard to teach," the coach told ESPN.com. "He knows how to look people off, how to take control of the game and how to change plays. If you had ever met Greg Paulus, you'd understand and I wouldn't get a lot of the questions that I get. If something can be accomplished, he can do it."
Paulus was named the 2004 Gatorade National Football Player of the Year after leading the Christian Brothers Academy to a 13-0 record and a Class AA New York state football title. He finished his high school football career with five state records.
Last season, the Orange finished last in the Big East with a 3-9 overall record and a 1-6 conference record.
