Tim Wakefield's return to the Red Sox meant the team needed to clear a space on the roster. The Sox did so by designating reliever Enrique Gonzalez for assignment, the team announced on Wednesday.

Gonzalez, 27, registered a 4.91 ERA in 3 2/3 innings pitched in two relief appearances over his two stints with the Red Sox this season. In Triple-A Pawtucket this year, he's gone 7-11 with a 5.23 ERA and 94 strikeouts. In his major league career, Gonzalez is 4-7 with a 5.93 ERA in 29 appearances over parts of four seasons with the Diamondbacks (2006-07), Padres (2008) and Red Sox (2009).

Wakefield will be on the mound Wednesday night, returning from a lengthy DL stint for a back and calf injury. He is 11-3 this season with a 4.31 ERA. In two rehab starts with Pawtucket, he went 1-1 with a 2.89 ERA.
