Northeastern is making strides toward becoming one of Boston's premier college athletic attractions. According to the Boston Herald, the school has consulted city officials about possibly using White Stadium for some varsity athletic competitions, although any kind of agreement is far from official.
Northeastern athletic director Peter Roby confirmed the discussions on Sunday.
Sources tell the Herald the school is contemplating an agreement because it wants a larger facility to showcase its sporting events, and White Stadium — although it would require upgrades — fits the bill. It also features unlimited parking and is close to the university's Huntington Avenue campus.
Roby told the Herald the agreement could help improve Huskies sports for the future.
"The mayor, as you know, mentioned that there were conversations that began with regards to a potential partnership that's consistent with public-private participation with the city," he told the newspaper. "Are we interested? Absolutely. But it's in the beginning stages. There's not a lot to report right now. We would like to address our facility situation not just for football but how we can create flexibility with all our needs given there are some needs on the part of the city, as well."
