Though the Sox were unable to land Toronto's ace at the trading deadline, it was not for lack of effort, according to a new report.
Theo Epstein and the Red Sox reportedly offered Toronto a package of Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden, Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone and an unspecified position player, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman. Sources from the Red Sox were told that it was the best offer made for Halladay, according to Heyman.
That offer was a bit less than the one the Sox made for Seattle's Felix Hernandez. In that reported offer, the Sox included Josh Reddick, Yamaico Navarro and Felix Doubront as possible pieces of a trade.
Neither worked out, of course, and Epstein reacted quickly by acquiring Victor Martinez from Cleveland for Masterson, Hagadone and Bryan Price, while the deals left on the table for Halladay and Hernandez will forever live on in world of "what-ifs."
