John Smoltz's career as a Boston Red Sox has officially come to an end.
Smoltz was designated for assignment on Aug. 7, a day after losing to the Yankees in the series opener of a four-game set. He will clear unconditional waivers on Wednesday, and will be free to sign a new contract with any team at that point.
The veteran right-hander does not plan on retiring and is open to joining clubs as a starter or reliever. The Dodgers, Marlins, Cardinals and Rangers have expressed interest, sources told FOXSports.com.
The Red Sox will pay the remainder of the one-year, $5.5 million contract Smoltz signed in the offseason. However if Smoltz signs with another team, the Red Sox would receive an offset of the pro-rated minimum salary.
