The Mets dangled outfielder Gary Sheffield on the waiver wire, but once he was claimed, they immediately brought him back. Still, Sheffield doubts he’ll end the 2009 season in a Mets uniform.
"I do not think I will be here," Sheffield told the New York Post. "But if I am sent to a team that I don't want to play for, I would go home."
If the Mets waive their 40-year-old outfielder a second time, they would be unable to reclaim him if another teams opts to snag him.
According to the Post, the Rangers and Marlins seem to be the likeliest Sheffield suitors at this point. The MLB waiver trade deadline is Aug. 31.
Sheffield is batting .290 with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs for the Mets this season.
