Bill Belichick has been keeping mum on the deal that brought Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders.
Al Davis? Not so much.
During Saturday's news conference to introduce Seymour as a member of the Oakland family, the owner shed some light on how the deal went down. Boston.com reports that the Patriots initiated discussions about a possible deal for the Pro Bowl defensive end.
"Ever since they were talking to me about [Derrick] Burgess, I've been talking to them about a defensive lineman but I never dreamed, and both Tom Cable and I knew the one we wanted — you shouldn't tell them this, it's the guy wearing No. 92," Davis said. "They were offering me some other things, and it was at the end that I had an idea what happened."
Davis said that a couple days before the trade was made, Belichick called him to gauge his interest in Seymour, and after deciding on a reasonable swap, it was a done deal.
"Bill said to me he has to check with [Robert] Kraft," Davis added. "I laughed because I thought all coaches had complete ability to do whatever they wanted. It's only this place where they have to go to the owner if they want to do something. So, he said he had to go to Kraft and he came back to me. They changed the deal a little bit, and then they gave me the opportunity to make my choice on draft choices."
Ultimately, the Raiders traded their 2011 first-round pick to New England.
