The Giants had the option to promote Allen Patrick from the practice squad to fill the hole left by the injured Danny Ware, but instead the Giants chose to claim Gartrell Johnson off waivers from the San Diego Chargers, the New York Daily News reports.

Johnson rushed for 176 yards on 43 carries in the preseason and got the nod over Patrick, who was cut from the practice squad on Tuesday. According to a Daily News' NFL source, the Giants also worked out Lorenzo Booker and possibly T.J. Duckett for the open position, but decided to fill their need with Johnson.

In order to place Johnson and linebacker Michael Boley, who was suspended for Week 1, on the active roster, the Giants cut offensive lineman Tutan Reyes and defensive tackle Leger Douzable.
