Rookie wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who was drafted by the Giants in the first round of this year's draft out of North Carolina, left Sunday's 23-17 win over the Redskins early in the fourth quarter after a defender landed on his ankle. X-rays were negative and the receiver has a sprained foot, according to ProFootballTalk.com.
Nicks, however, didn't seem too concerned when he told the New York Daily News that it was a "knick-knack" injury.
Though Nicks was a big part of the Giants' offensive plans, the other receivers appeared ready to carry the load. Steve Smith led all New York receivers with six catches for 80 yards, tight end Kevin Boss caught three passes for 62 yards and second-year wideout Mario Manningham caught three balls for 58 yards and his first career touchdown.
The Giants jumped out to a 17-0 lead on the strength of a field goal, Manningham's touchdown and a 37-yard fumble return by Osi Umenyiora, playing in his first game since Super Bowl XLII. The Redskins cut the lead to six with just 1:30 left on the clock but failed to recover an onside kick.
The Giants travel to Dallas next Sunday night in the opening game in the Cowboys' new stadium.
