The banged up defense of the Giants appears to be even more banged up than we thought. Michael Johnson and Kenny Phillips, the two starting safeties for Tom Coughlin's team, did not participate during the media portion of practice on Wednesday, the New York Daily News reports.

The two safeties were in the injury area to begin practice before eventually joining the secondary for individual drills, though they did not take part.

A Giants spokesman said Phillips has a knee injury that has been an issue since training camp, but he did play in the Giants' Week 1 win against Washington.

Johnson suffered a "burner" in Sunday's game and did not leave the game. His injury status for Wednesday was uncertain.
