John Henry’s Track Record Proves Red Sox Will be Fine For Stretch Run

Even though the Red Sox just dropped three of four games to a team that essentially has nothing to play for, have no fear — John Henry is here.

According to the Worcester Telegram-Gazette, the Red Sox have never had a losing record in September since John Henry’s first year of ownership in 2002. Since Henry bought the Red Sox and brought Theo Epstein aboard prior to the 2003 season, Boston has learned to excel down the stretch, missing the postseason just once in that span.

During that span, they’ve made the necessary moves to have the best shot at winning a championship, adding such spare parts as Dave Roberts, Doug Mientkiewicz, Eric Hinske and others.

The Red Sox have 25 games left in 2009. Fifteen of them will happen at Fenway Park. There probably isn’t enough time to catch the Yankees for the AL East title, but there is ample time for the Sox to put some distance between themselves and Texas in the wild-card race.

A winning September has happened most years that Henry has been in Boston. Who’s to say it won’t happen again? Could Billy Wagner be this year’s wild card? What about Alex Gonzalez, or Joey Gathright?

With the track record the Red Sox have had under Henry’s reign, don’t be surprised if it all works out yet again.
