Just 22 months after becoming the executive director of the NHLPA, Paul Kelly was removed from the high-ranking position, and the shocking decision has yet to settle in.
“I want to take some time to let my emotions settle before I talk about this,” Kelly told The Globe and Mail. “Quite frankly, I’m still stunned and saddened at what has happened. I need a little time to figure out exactly what I want to say to the players and to the public.”
In addition to Kelly's removal, Kelly's assistant Patrick Flatley resigned and Bob Lundquist, a friend of Kelly and accounting consultant who helped the NHLPA determine the hockey-related revenues to set the salary-cap limit, also resigned.
