Chapman is a 21-year-old lefty and perhaps the top pitching prospect in the entire world. In a few weeks, he's likely to become an MLB free agent and may very well end up in the Bronx, Boston or Los Angeles.
The Cuban defector has established residency in Andorra, a country of roughly 84,000 that borders France and Spain. This residency means Chapman will not enter baseball's amateur draft, making him a free agent.
The Yankees have already been public about their interest in the southpaw, who was clocked at 102 mph during the World Baseball Classic. ESPN is reporting that the Red Sox, Dodgers and Angels are going to show interest in Chapman as well.
Because he has a passport, the MLB will probably be swift in determining his free agent status. Once his identity is verified, Chapman will be able to apply for a visa to play in the United States.
