Starting Pitchers
LHP Jon Lester (14-7, 3.33 ERA) vs. RHP Joba Chamberlain (8-6, 4.73 ERA)
In his last start, Sept. 19 in Baltimore, Lester won his fourth straight decision, giving up three runs on 10 hits and four walks, without allowing a walk, in six innings. He has been the Sox most consistent starters this season, posting a staff-high 22 quality starts in 30 outings. He has also been one of the AL’s most consistent starters, giving up more than three runs just once in his last 20 starts, going 11-2 in that span.
In seven career starts against the Yankees, he is 3-0 with a 3.11 ERA (16 earned runs in 46 1/3 innings). In New York he is 1-0 with a 1.52 ERA (four earned runs, 14 innings) in two starts. In three starts against the Yankees this season, he is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA (six earned runs, 20 innings). Since the start of 2008 he has allowed three earned runs or fewer in six innings in each of his six starts against the Yankees.
Chamberlain is making his 30th start of the season. He is winless in his last eight starts since Aug. 11, going 0-4 with an ERA of 8.42 (29 earned runs, 31 innings). In his last start, Sept. 20 in Seattle, he matched his career high, allowing seven earned runs, taking the loss, going three innings, giving up six hits and three walks, with two strikeouts.
It is his 10th career appearance and sixth career start (fourth this season) against the Sox. In his last start against the Sox, Aug. 6 at Yankee Stadium, he earned the win, despite giving up a career high seven walks. He allowed four earned runs on six hits, with five strikeouts, in five innings. It was the most walks allowed by a Yankee pitcher who also recorded a win since David Cone walked seven in a 12-3 win over the Tigers on April 9, 1999.
