Struggling Josh Beckett Looks To Turn Things Around at the Trop

The Sox improved to 5-8 against the Rays this season, winning for just the third time in their last 17 games at Tropicana Field since Sept. 23, 2007. Since June 30, 2008, the Sox have lost three of their last five games, eight of 12, and 15 of 22 against the Rays. They were swept in their last trip to Tropicana Field, a two-game series Aug. 4 and 5.

Head to Head

Jon Lester beat the Rays Tuesday night for the first time this season, and recorded just his second win since July 25. The win helped the Sox in the wild card race, as the Rangers swept a doubleheader from the Blue Jays. The Sox now have a four-game lead over the Rangers and a six-game lead over the Rays in the wild card.  Winning the first game of this series was vital at Tropicana Field, where the Sox have struggled mightily recently.

The Sox ace has struggled in his last three starts, going 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA, giving up 10 home runs. Although the Sox are 2-1 in those games. In his last start, Aug. 28 against the Blue Jays at Fenway, Beckett was not involved in the decision as he gave up five runs on five hits and five walks, with nine strikeouts in five innings. All five runs came on home runs. Beckett, who gave up just 18 home runs in 2008, allowed 12 in August.

Beckett last faced the Mays My 10 at Fenway, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in six innings, but did not get a decision in the Sox’ 4-3 win.  In his last start at Tropicana Field, April 30, he gave up seven runs in 4 2/3 innings. In five career starts at the Trop, Beckett has a record of 1-3 with a 3.58 ERA.

Garza is in a six-game winless streak, and has not won at home in his last five starts. His last win was July 24 in Toronto, defeating Roy Halladay. He has just one win in his last 10 starts. His last win at home was June 24 against the Phillies. He leads the AL with a .233 opponents’ average, but has received the lowest run support in the league at 3.73 runs per nine innings. The Rays have scored a total of 18 runs in his nine losses. He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 19-of-26 starts this season, including 17 of his last 22. 

This is his 11th career start against the Sox and fifth this season. He has a career record of 5-1 with a 2.93 ERA (20 earned runs in 61 1/3 innings).This season he is 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA against the Sox. His last start against the Sox was Aug. 4 in Tampa Bay. He did not get a decision, as the Rays won, 4-2 in 13 innings.

Getting Josh Beckett back to his ace form will do a lot for the Sox, both in this game and looking to the rest of the season. Expect Jason Varitek to return behind the plate. Billy Wagner, who pitched a scoreless inning Tuesday, will be unavailable Wednesday. And Jonathan Papelbon, who pitched two scoreless innings, could also be unavailable.
