Varitek Behind the Plate, Lowell Gets a Breather

Jason Varitek returns to the lineup for Tuesday night's matchup with Zack Greinke and the Royals while third baseman Mike Lowell will start this one from the bench.

Lowell went 0-for-3 with a pair of walks and one strikeout in Monday night's loss to the Royals and was the lone Sox starter who failed to notch a hit. The third baseman had played in three straight games leading up to Tuesday night's tilt and last received a day off on Friday, Sept. 18 against the Orioles in Baltimore.

Varitek has sat out three of Boston's last four games. In his last start, he tallied one hit in five at bats against the Orioles in Sunday's 9-3 win at Camden Yards.

The lineup also features Jason Bay hitting in the sixth slot behind David Ortiz. Bay hit fifth in Monday's loss and is riding a seven-game hit streak in which he is batting .423 with five homers, 13 RBIs and has scored eight runs.
