It's been a very rough year for Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang and chances are, it may be his last in pinstripes.
The 30-year-old righty underwent shoulder surgery in July, ending an incredibly disappointing 2009 season where he went 1-6 with a 9.64 ERA. Wang, who is shut down from throwing until January, wants to remain with the Yankees in 2010.
Wang singed a one year, $5 million contract last offseason and is eligible for arbitration, although the chances of the Yankees offering him anything for 2010 are slim.
"That's something we won't even think about until November," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told luhud.com. "Those are issues for another day."
If Cashman and the Yankees don't offer him arbitration at the December deadline, Wang will become a free agent and be available to any MLB club or re-sign with the Yanks to a minor league deal. Wang has had two surgeries since 2001 but was dominant from 2005 through last season, which was cut short after he injured his leg running the bases against the Astros in interleague action. In that stretch he went 54-20 with a 3.79 ERA.
"I think I can pitch again," Wang said. "I'm going to do all the rehab and get back. I hope it's with the Yankees. I would like to stay in New York but I don't know what will happen."
