This move shouldn't surprise anyone.
After struggling mightily against Buffalo in Week 1 and then falling to the Jets in Week 2, the Patriots defense looked terrible — inexperienced, confused, lost, etc. It lacked the veteran leadership that Rodney Harrison, Richard Seymour, Mike Vrabel, Tedy Bruschi and others spent almost 10 years building.
Now, New England may be about to get some of that veteran presence back.
According to ESPN.com, retired linebacker Junior Seau underwent a physical this week as he contemplates a return to the Patriots. Seau was in town to film an episode of his TV show, Sports Jobs With Junior Seau.
Seau, 40, has said he will only return to the league if he is wearing a Patriots uniform because of his relationship with head coach Bill Belichick and owner Bob Kraft. He could be back on the field as early as November.
After sitting out the first three months of the 2008 season, Seau returned to the Patriots in December and played in the final four games, leading the team to four consecutive wins to close out the regular season. In 19 years in the NFL, the 12-time Pro Bowler has compiled 1,515 tackles, 17 fumble recoveries, 18 interceptions and 56.5 sacks.
