In what will be his 20th season in the NFL, Seau returns to Bill Belichick and the Patriots for a fourth season at the age of 40.
"There’s a linebacking corps we have now that were probably in first
grade when I was a rookie," Seau said at his press conference on Wednesday, according to the Boston Herald. "There’s a lot of youth. But they can play
the game. If there’s anything I can help them, either in the meeting
room, weight room, whatever it may take, it’s going to be fun."
With the depth on defense becoming an issue for the Patriots, Belichick turned to a man he knows can fit into his defensive schemes. For Seau, the decision wasn't a difficult one once Belichick called him.
"I know the system. I trust the coach and the ownership and the
organization. And I have a lot of love for the players in the locker
room," Seau said. "That’s the reason why I wanted to come back here. It has nothing
to do with the San Diego Chargers and being a hometown guy. I couldn’t
give the San Diego Chargers what they need. Because I don’t know the
locker room. There are so many unknowns … and I trust this coach,
Bill Belichick."
If Seau had already reached the promised land in the NFL, chances are he would still be home with his family instead of preparing for the Tennessee Titans in Week 6. And when asked about how not having a title impacted his decision, Seau didn't hold back.
"No, if I had ring in place, I probably would think otherwise."
