The Red Sox are likely going to watch assistant general manager Jed Hoyer be announced as the newest San Diego Padres general manager sometime next week but don't expect the club to sit back and wait for a replacement to emerge.
According to NESN's Peter Gammons, the Red Sox have offered front office jobs to a pair of former general managers — J.P. Ricciardi formerly of the Blue Jays and Kevin Towers of the Padres.
The Red Sox also hosted a farewell luncheon for Hoyer on Friday and will likely not have to make any major reconstruction to their front office should Towers and Ricciardi accept positions. Assistant general manager Ben Cherington — who oversaw scouting and player development — will likely take over Hoyer's role which dealt more with the Major League personnel side.
Ricciardi, a Worcester, Mass. native, was hired as the Blue Jays general manager in 2001 and was fired earlier this month despite signing a five-year extension with the club after the 2005 season. Towers was the GM of the Padres since 1995 and took the San Diego club to four division championships and one World Series in 1998.
