On Thursday afternoon, general manager Theo Epstein announced that the team had acquired outfielder Jeremy Hermida from the Marlins in exchange for left-handed pitchers Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez.
The 25-year-old Hermida hit .259 with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs in 129 games with the Marlins in 2009 while setting a career high with 56 walks. He made 73 starts in right field and 40 starts in left and made just one error in 205 chances, good for a .995 fielding percentage. An intercostal strain on his right side kept him out of action after Aug. 31.
Hermida was selected by the Marlins with the 11th overall pick in the 2002 MLB draft.
Jones made his big-league debut in 2009 and appeared in 11 games in relief. He posted a 9.24 ERA with the Red Sox, and in Pawtucket, he went 4-3 with a 4.25 ERA.
Alvarez, 20, spent the year splitting time between Single-A Salem and Short-A Lowell. In 14 outings with Lowell, he led the New York-Penn League with a 1.52 ERA and recorded eight wins. In 76 minor league appearances within the Sox system, he boasted a 23-15 record and a 3.21 ERA.
