Hoping to give the Phillies a run for the best 1-2 starters in the NL East, the Mets are likely to be strong bidders for John Lackey, writes David Lennon of Newsday.

Mets' GM Omar Minaya reportedly received a very favorable first impression from Lackey's agent this week as the Mets appear to be interested in pairing Johan Santana with a top tier pitcher, namely Lackey.

Because there aren't many other No. 1 pitchers available besides Roy Halladay, Lackey may be able to grab a contract in the $100 million range.
