Two years later, the Phillies are in the hunt for Boston's third baseman once again. Lowell isn't a free agent, but the Phillies need a third baseman to replace Pedro Feliz, and the Red Sox seem to be open to trading him.
According to SI's Jon Heyman, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro had a "brief talk" with the Red Sox about the possibility of bringing Lowell to Philadelphia. However, Heyman says that the chances of Lowell being dealt to Philly are relatively low; Amaro is more likely to pursue free-agent third basemen such as Mark DeRosa, Placido Polanco, Adrian Beltre or Miguel Tejada.
In 2007, the Phillies reportedly offered Lowell a four-year, $50 million deal that Lowell was very close to accepting before deciding to give Boston a hometown discount. He eventually accepted a three-year, $37.5 million deal from the Sox.
In 2009, the 35-year-old Lowell hit .290 with 17 homers and 75 RBIs in 119 games. His 2008 season was marred by injuries; he eventually underwent hip surgery prior to the 2009 season.
