Thomas, Colorado’s Craig Anderson and Buffalo’s Ryan Miller are all worthy candidates to take net for the red, white and blue come February, and Thomas still has confidence that he has an equal chance as anyone despite his shaky start.
“It’s a long season,” Thomas told the Boston Herald. “It doesn’t really matter what you did in October if you’re lighting it up in January. Part of it is about peaking at the right time, but also if you’ve played consistently well over a period of years. Hopefully they look at that consistency.”
As far as he knows, he still stands as one of the few keepers to get the nod for the Olympic Games in Vancouver in late February. Anderson owns a 10-3-2 record for the Avalanche, who are off to one of the best starts in the league. Miller, meanwhile, owns a 8-1-1 record for the Sabres, who lead Boston by four points in the Northeast Division despite playing three fewer games.
Despite appearing to be the third and last choice at this point in the season, Thomas has yet to hear anything from Team USA headquarters:
“I haven’t been in touch with anybody from USA Hockey to know what they’re thinking.”
