Founded in 1969, Pine Street is the largest provider of emergency shelter, street outreach, job training and permanent housing for homeless men and women in New England. Pine Street Inn welcomes more than 1,300 homeless individuals daily to provide short- and long-term solutions so that they can begin the journey out of homelessness and on to permanent housing.
Ference and his family hoped to bring some holiday cheer to the men and women currently staying at Pine Street Inn during Christmas, but for Ference, it was also another chance for him and his family to stay grounded.
"I went there for Thanksgiving last year and obviously the team is great with helping to set those things up," Ference said. "But my oldest girl is getting a little older and I feel it is important for her and me to get out of our little bubbles and the life we live."
Ference realizes how blessed he is to be playing the game he’s always loved and to be paid millions of dollars to do so. He wants to not only help those less fortunate than him, but also teach his children to do so as well.
"Obviously we’re fortunate to live the lives we live and you got to bring yourselves back to earth; doing things like that and remembering what Christmas is all about," he said. "She is 4 years old and I think it’s important for her to learn those lessons early."
