The award was voted on by members of the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
An All-Star for the second consecutive season, Youkilis was limited to just 136 games due to injury. Yet Youkilis was a driving force when he played, batting .305 with 27 home runs and 94 RBIs while posting a .998 fielding percentage at first base and a .974 mark at third. (It's safe to say he's been forgiven for his misadventure in left field at Yankee Stadium.)
He also reached a career high in steals with seven and finished second in the American League in on-base percentage (.413) and OPS (.961) and fifth in slugging (.548). Youkilis becomes the club’s first MVP at first base since Mo Vaughn in 1996.
