With the free-agent market seemingly shrinking by the minute, it's do-or-die time for the Mets in their pursuit of Jason Bay or Matt Holliday.
The Mets are stepping up their efforts to sign Bay by "tweaking" their original offer, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman. The Mets originally offered Bay and agent Joe Urbon a four-year, $65 million contract, but according to Heyman, Urbon "signaled a willingness" to agree to a five-year deal for a little less money per year. Bay was reportedly originally hoping for a six-year deal.
The Mets are also believed to be rejoining the Holliday sweepstakes, with Mets GM Omar Minaya possibly speaking with Holliday's agent, Scott Boras, on Wednesday.
ESPN's Buster Olney echoed the report, writing on his Twitter page that the "Mets' offer to Bay stands at four years, could go to 5 eventually; talks cont.. Mets monitoring the Holliday talks, not actively involved."
