They probably won't, but in the words of Lloyd Christmas, there's a chance.
According to the New York Post, the Red Sox are trying to wrestle Hanley Ramirez away from the Marlins. Ramirez was one of the most highly touted prospects in Boston's system before he was shipped off to Florida prior to the 2006 season in a deal for Mike Lowell, Josh Beckett and Guillermo Mota.
Last week, Red Sox shortstop Alex Gonzalez signed with the Blue Jays, leaving Jed Lowrie as the likely candidate for the starting role in 2010 — not exactly a thrilling idea. That's where Ramirez would come in.
In 2006, Ramirez was named the National League Rookie of the Year after hitting .292 with 17 homers and 59 RBIs. Last season, he hit .342 with 24 homers and 106 RBIs. That kind of production from the shortstop position would be a welcome change for the Red Sox, who have watched an assortment of candidates — Edgar Renteria, Julio Lugo, Gonzalez and Lowrie among them — flounder at the plate over the past five years.
The Marlins would be crazy to let Ramirez go. But crazier things have happened.
