Report: Adrian Beltre Still in Play for Red Sox The failed Mike Lowell trade created a roadblock, but the Red Sox are still contenders to sign Adrian Beltre, according to NESN insider and ESPNBoston.com reporter Gordon Edes.

According to the report, an industry source says that the Red Sox have remain engaged with Beltre and his agent, Scott Boras, and that talks are expected to resume after the new year. The report also says that Beltre, a free agent, could come at a much lower cost than he would have several weeks ago, due to a quiet market.

Beltre, who will turn 31 on April 7, is a career .270 hitter with 250 home runs and 906 RBIs in 12 major league seasons. He’s averaged 146 games per year in the last 11 seasons, though he only played in 111 last season with Seattle. He also owns a .957 fielding percentage at third base.

The Red Sox’ interest in Beltre has been well-documented this offsesaon, dating back to the weekend before Thanksgiving. When the Lowell deal was being negotiated, Beltre seemed to be the team’s solution at third base, but that obviously changed when the trade fell through.
