The Red Sox appear to be doing some early holiday shopping, as reports indicate that the team has contacted free-agent infielders Adam Everett and Adam Kennedy.
WEEI.com is reporting that the Red Sox have contacted Everett, a shortstop, yet have not made him an offer. Meanwhile, the Boston Herald is reporting that Boston contacted Kennedy for what could be a "super-utility" role with the club, as the 34-year-old veteran has played everywhere on the diamond except pitcher and catcher since breaking into the bigs in 1999.
Everett, a first-round draft pick of the Red Sox in 1998, was traded to the Astros in December of 1999 along with Greg Miller for outfielder Carl Everett. The shortstop went on to spend seven seasons as Houston's shortstop before bouncing from Minnesota in 2008 to Detroit last season, where he hit .238 with 43 runs and 21 doubles. Considered one of the best defensive shortstops in the game, Everett owns a .976 fielding percentage in 792 career games.
Kennedy just completed his 11th major league season and his first with Oakland, where he hit .289 with 11 homers and 63 RBIs — his most since 2000 when he drove in 72 runs with the Angels. Kennedy spent the majority of the summer at the hot corner but also filled in at second base, his primary position, for another 50 games.
