Monday night, The Associated Press reported that free-agent outfielder Mike Cameron has agreed to a two-year deal with the Red Sox, an agreement that will be subject to a physical. According to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the deal is in the "$15.5 million range."
Rosenthal suggests via Twitter that it is unclear whether Cameron, a three-time Gold Glove center fielder, would play left or center for the Red Sox. ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick, however, reports that Cameron is expected to play left field, allowing Jacoby Ellsbury and J.D. Drew to remain in center and right field, respectively.
Presumably, the Red Sox' interest in Cameron grew following this weekend's developments with incumbent left fielder and free agent Jason Bay, who reportedly rejected the team's offer of four years and $60 million.
Largely overlooked as one of the top outfielders available in this offseason's free-agent class, Cameron would be a serious defensive upgrade in Boston. But Cameron, who will be 37 on Jan. 8, can swing the stick as well, having bopped 24 homers and driven in 70 runs in 2009 for the Milwaukee Brewers.
