The acquisitions of John Lackey and Mike Cameron are nice, but many Red Sox fans are still not satisfied. The Red Sox may not be either.
According to multiple reports on Wednesday, Theo Epstein could still be targeting Adrian Gonzalez. FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reported that the Red Sox are "working hard" to trade for the first baseman, citing a major league source.
Though Rosenthal said that a deal is not close and may not happen, he added that "Gonzalez … might be the final piece the Red Sox envision as they look to complete their offseason construction, which began with the signing of free-agent shortstop Marco Scutaro to a two-year, $12 million contract."
A separate report in the San Diego Union-Tribune said that the Padres, despite having a team-friendly contract with Gonzalez, are still in search of pitching, a center fielder and a catcher. While the Red Sox obviously have not spoken about who's available, the speculation naturally leads to Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury and Max Ramirez, for whom the Red Sox are reportedly trying to trade.
Of course, the fact that Padres GM Jed Hoyer knows every single thing about Boston's farm system means that no trade will be easy for Boston. But while it's unknown what will come of the discussion, there is no question that the door is still open for Gonzalez.
