Boston’s North Station platform has been renamed the Red Auerbach Concourse to honor the late Celtics patriarch.
The team — in conjunction with Friends of Red, the city of Boston, Delaware North Companies and the MBTA — made the announcement Friday at a dedication ceremony featuring Celtics coach Doc Rivers, captain Paul Pierce, former Celtics greats and members of Auerbach’s family.
Two plaques were unveiled in honor of Auerbach: one in the shape of a Shamrock for good luck and the second in a sculpture of a famous photo of Red Auerbach. In addition, banners of Auerbach and signs featuring Red’s famous signature will be placed around the station entrance, where so many fans have arrived by train to watch games at Boston Garden and now the TD Garden.
Auerbach, who died in 2006 at the age of 89, was a member of the Celtics’ organization for 57 years. The Hall of Famer was involved in all but one (2007) of the Celtics’ 17 championship seasons.
