ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Edwards is likely going to receive some form of discipline from the NFL for his plea of no contest to misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct. The former Cleveland Brown was fined $1,000 and given a suspended 180-day jail sentence for punching a friend of the Cavaliers’ LeBron James outside a Cleveland night club on Oct. 5. Edwards initially pled not guilty before changing his plea.
Two days after the alleged incident, Edwards was traded to the Jets. In 12 regular-season games with New York, the receiver caught 35 passes with four going for touchdowns. In the Jets’ first-round playoff victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, Edwards was held to just two catches for 15 yards.
The good news, for both Edwards and Jets fans, is that whatever punishment the NFL doles out won’t go into effect until the 2010 season, regardless of how the Jets fare Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.
Unlike many other players who have been suspended by the NFL for code-of-conduct violations, Edwards does not have any other offenses on his record and could stand to face just a fine from commissioner Roger Goodell.
