IRVING, Texas — Former NFL receiver Terry Glenn has been arrested on an auto theft charge, but his attorney says it's a mix-up over a rental car.

Glenn, 35, was booked into the Irving jail around 7 p.m. Tuesday and released about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

His attorney, Luis Vera of San Antonio, called the arrest "the biggest crock of garbage." He says Glenn rented the sport-utility vehicle from National Car Rental several weeks ago and was on his way to return it when he was stopped and arrested after National reported it stolen.

Vera says the car rental company had Glenn's credit card and could have charged whatever was owed.

A call and e-mail to National Car Rental weren't returned Wednesday.

Glenn played 12 NFL seasons from 1996 to 2007, with New England, Green Bay and the Dallas.
